Re: Hawken .50's
you can download a copy of the TC Hawken manual at their web site. That would be the best place to start. .490 [censored] and .015 patches ought to be good to start. No 11 percussion caps, powder, you may want to try triple 7 in your percussion guns, but back off on the powder loads by about 15% from black powder loads. A powder measure is necessary. Patches can be lubed with olive oil, commercial patch lubes, even spit. You will need somethings, and others are handy and some unnecessary.
Necessary: powder patches, [censored], caps, powder measure, ball starter, cleaning jag for 50 cal. cleaning patches (old sheets, flannel etc. cut into 2 inch squares.) A container of cleaner, (commercial, homemade or water) A powder flask or horn is nice A ball puller, pliers, screw driver, nipple wrench, patch worm.
Nice to have: possible bag or range box (small too or fishing tackle box) capper, extra nipple, nipple pick (stiff hair thin wire will do) Solvent (alcohol to clean oil and grease from bore before shooting)
some is really if ever used some stuff sold is really never used. There's whole store loads of stuff.
Some things are easy to make, for instance a ball starter. (I used a wooden crab mallet in my 50 cal rifle for years as a ball starter) a flat piece of bone or antler with a 4 inch piece of dowel works great.
