Good luck today fellow muzzleloader hunters. I was all set up to be out in the blind this morning but a buddy called and he shot a big doe last night and backed out bc after 50yrds of good blood he could see her bedded down in front of him. So we are going in at first light to recover her.
At daybreak,I started picking my way to my treestand on the far side of a swamp about 0.6 miles from the road. I watched a young buck on a mission go cruising by at 8:25. At 9:30, I reached a knob on the near side of the swamp where I could see really well. I decided to find a good spot to sit down and eat my first sandwich, when a small bear burst out of a patch of thick stuff not 20 yards away! He was gone before I could shoulder my inline...drats!!!!!
Sitting in my treestand now waiting for my redemption!
Snuck out a little further to a smaller swamp and found 3 does. Thought about it for a minute and decided to commit to bear hunting since rain is forecast for next Saturday. Might take a doe later today if I see one on the walk out.
Spent most of the day completing honey dew items. I did get most of my stuff in the truck. I will pick up my friend Skip and his stuff tomorrow morning and then drive to Tioga Co. to hunt Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
We may head over to Lyman Run Lake tomorrow afternoon, and make a few casts before heading to the Burnin' Barrel for supper.
Best of luck to all you muzzleloaders chasing deer and bear next week. Aim small to miss small!:smile2:
Glad to have gotten out today. Saw my first deer at 445 am as it darted out in front of the car. Antilock brake test - all good. Yes deer get me very excited! Reached the SGL parking lot at 530 for the one hour hike up to the top two miles in. Sat till 1030 but saw nothing. Got my game camera pictures out and plenty of deer pictures and one bear. The special picture is of a Game Warden looking at camera is aimed toward. No idea what he was doing.
Well on the walk down, despite my best efforts I jumped a small doe. I went in after it and saw two does but they were on the move. A good day with six miles on the legs.
Was heading in about quarter after 5 and silhouetted two deer on the field ahead of me against the frost. Got up in the stand by 5:30, and while I was setting things up heard a doe snorting like crazy on the adjoining property, figure the guy over there with that box blind was heading in and jumped her.
About 6:00 got to listen to some fighting bucks on that next farm, but something sounded off.... guy in the box blind?
WOW! Huge deer on the edge of the field looks like if he had a saddle I could leave the quad home! Darn! burned my buck tag already! It's 8:00, and no doe yet. Now it's a three point coming straight to me......
Went stone dead. But it's a great day, I saw deer!
CONGRADULATIONS!!!! But, in fairness, I feel compelled to warn you that muzzleloading is addictive, even more so if you decide to try out flintlock. There is no muzzleloaders anonymous, so WELCOME TO THE CLUB!!!!
Buddy and myself both shot doe today, saw plenty of deer...he got his at 9am, mine came at 5pm...no bear seen.....2 bear were at chads and dad being processed around 6 tonight.
I was lucky enough to get a bear with my .54 flinter my cousin made for me. Didn't see a thing until 3:00 pm and then he rambled right up to me as I was still hunting. It was all over in 15 seconds. Was the 32nd bear checked by 5:30 at NC Regional Office. Have no idea how to post pic.
CONGRATS on your bear Farmguy1!!! WOW....32 bears cked in first day of this new season at NC check station!!!! As I predicted earlier....I expect 2019 to be a record bear kill.
Me and Calico ( .50 caliber TC Firehawk) scored a fine Pike Co doe yesterday at 11 a.m. 50 yard shot. She stood there, after the shot! Just looked around! Then walked away with her tail up and crashed.
A deer on Calico's first day of her first season is an excellent start to a beautiful friendship!
Now if I can get a bear to mosey on by...
Life is good. The LORD is gracious...
Hunted in 3c
Hunted till 10 only one tail seen walking in
Had a guy with his German shorthair grouse hunting from 730 till 9 around me but I looked at that as they could've sent deer my way.
Took a nice mature doe Saturday evening around 530. 1 shot with iron sights at 67 yards and dropped in her tracks, first deer with the inline. Saw about 15 doe in the afternoon and had some younger ones closer but was holding out for a nice mature doe.
