What is your process for cleaning between shots at the range? I am new to muzzleloading, and I shoot triple 777 pellets out of my TC Triumph. Each shot leaves a ring of fouling at the bottom of the bore where the charge is packed.

I've been running a patch with solvent, then a dry patch between each shot. Even so, after five to ten shots the accuracy of my shots starts to diminish, with more unpredictable fliers. I think it may have something to do with that ring of fouling, which I can only seem to get out with a bronze brush (pain to use at the range).

I've heard that licking a patch and running that through followed by a dry patch is the best way to do it. What do you all think?

I shoot 777.

In my longrifle, I run a "spit" patch down the barrel after each shot.I follow up with 2 dry patches and I seldom have any trouble shooting 15 to twenty shots with no
"fliers" This is with black powder and a pillow ticking patch with wonderlube melted into it.

Simple solution,start using Blackhorn 209 powder and you can keep on shooting without cleaning.Your 20th shot will be just as accurate as your first.This powder really has made everything else obsolete.

I use real bp in all my frontloaders. In all my front loaders I first run an alcohol patch down the bore followed by two dry patches to clean the oil out of the barrel. I then let it sit a couple of minutes and load up. I then swab with an alcohol patch and two dry ones and go check the target then come back and reload. I continue that ritual after each shot and do not get flyers. You are experiencing the dreaded crud ring common to 777 pellet users. It has caused some to look for other powders.

the only time i really ever run a cleanin patch down my barrel is when there is high humitty other then i dont just like today 13 shots and no cleaning and still had a great grouping al i use is a spit patch with goex powder 50 to 70 grs

Hmm, sounds like it is the "crud" ring giving me the accuracy problems. I did some reading and it looks like this is only an issue with the 777 pellets. I guess I'll look into using blackhorn 209.

I just use a small spray bottle of water to wet my patches and then swab with dry patches. Make sure to get down in the patent breech chamber on the TC guns. My PA Hunter shoots great IF it's kept clean each shot but an unpredictable flyer will show up sooner or later if I don't. The rifle was named "Eureka" after I found out how to eliminate those darned flyers.

I use denatured alcohol for freezing weather bore cleaner. I use Crisco for shooting patch lube but have tried just about everything at one time or another.

I recently heard about useing water soluable mineral oil like that is used in the CNC machine trade as a coolant and am going to try that out next time I shoot. It's used to wet the shooting patch and then let dry and use it that way. I am curious to see how it works out.

Too bad that Blackhorn 209 won't work in a flinter.

That crud ring comes from 209 shotshell primers..Get yourself some underpowered muzzleloader 209 primers from Winchester or Remington.Any gun shop can help you or you can get them online.

In your experience with your TC muzzleloader, did you find that cleaning the breech plug every so often throughout a shooting session improves accuracy?

I didn't know the 209 primers were causing the ring of fouling. I have heard that you don't get the ring when using loose powder.
