Percussion Cap Loading Tool

I just bought my first percussion cap muzzle loader (Lyman Deerstalker) and took it out to the range on Sunday. I can't wait to take it out for the early muzzle loader season. Shoots great and feels very well balanced.

In searching for an easier way to seat the percussion caps, I'm seeing a few tools available but they have mixed results according to user reviews.

Does anyone use a capper that works well for them? I definitely don't want to be fumbling with the caps if I need a follow up shot.

Thanks for any input.

Re: Percussion Cap Loading Tool

A straight line capper works just fine, but needs to be sheltered from moisture. I often used a piece of thick leather tied to the trigger guard with a couple of holes punched in it the right size for percussion caps to friction fit into each hole. I eventually sewed a small extra piece of leather on my horn shoulder strap for the in line capper to slide into, the way a knife slides into a sheath. It was always there at the same place. The oiled leather protected it from rain and sparks.

I've had good luck with straight line cappers with my TC Cherokee... No problems to report.

Straight line cappers are fine for deer hunting. For small game I use the oval and round Ted Cash Cappers.

I use a T/C straight line capper. Have used it for around 20 years. Just buy a good one.

Re: Percussion Cap Loading Tool

When I hunted with my Percussion renegade, I used a straight line capper for a while, worked well enough. Then I bought some of those green plastic speed loaders that held two caps with each loader and just used them when hunting. Worked well enough also.
