Renegade at The Range Today

I set up a 54 cal single trigger caplock Renegade with a Weaver K3 Post scope for the early season. Shot if for the first time today. Grouped pretty well but was surprised to see I am getting about 6 inches of drop from 50 to 100 yards. I am using Hornady 425 Bullets with 100 gr of FF. Need to sight in about 3" high at 50 yards. Goal today was to get it on paper. I checked the book and it looks like 6-7 inches is to be expected.

Re: Renegade at The Range Today

54 Cal Patched Round ball at 1600 FPS drops 8 inches between 50 yards and 100. Actually worse than the 425 gr bullet. I would not have guessed that but I suppose not able to seal as tight as the bullet. The point that I didn't make very well is don't sight your mz in at 50 yards and think you will be a couple inches low at 100. And if you sight in at 100 you are going to be high at 50.

This is per the Lyman Black Powder Handbook. There is not a lot published on muzzle loader ballistics, even on the internet.

Re: Renegade at The Range Today

Drop could also be due to the PRB is not as steam lined and thus sheds speed a lot faster.

Take you kids hunting and you will never have to hunt for your kids.

Re: Renegade at The Range Today

PRB will start out faster but also looses velocity faster. I sight all my flintlocks 1 inch high at 50 yds (cause I like a little 6 o'clock hold), but also shoot them at 100 yds just to know where they hit and what accuracy I get. Both my 1st .50 cal and my .54 cal hit 8 inches low at 100 yds. Still have to shoot my .45 and .50 cal builds at 100 yds, though with my .45 I'd never take a 100 yd shot. More out of curiosity. Did take my 1st deer with a .50 cal at a tad over 100 yds, but I shot it a good bit and also shot a couple matches at 100 yds, so knew exactly where it hit and knew it's accuracy at that range (with a good solid rest). That thing is a tack driver
