TC Stock Question - "K" stamped under the lock

I have had a few kit guns that had a "K" in the barrel channel and a "K" on the serial number on the barrel and they were obviously kit guns. But I have seen at least two that did not have a "K" on the barrel serial number but did have a "K" in the barrel channel AND under the lock stamped in the wood. The other thing about these two stocks is that they both had factory finishes (by the appearance at least). My question is, are these stocks with the "K" under the lock replacement stocks that TC replaced under warranty?

I believe when the serial number has a K, such as TC guns, it signifies it was a kit gun.

Re: TC Stock Question - "K" stamped under the lock

It's possible that TC would issue a kit stock as a replacement. When mfgers run out of parts they usually use up what's left. Since TC is no longer in the side lock business. Especially if the replacement is due to user negligence and not due to a factory mistake.

Another thing is supposedly TC would not cover a kit build under warranty so if I had a factory stock that needed replaced I wouldn't want a K marked stock especially if I had to pay for the replacement.

The TC side locks that I have are numbered. Some are numbered with a strip of tape in the barrel channel or under the trigger guard but are not the same as the serial number of the rifle.

I've seen the number under the trigger guard also but it does not match the SN on the barrel like you said.

It can also be someone over time mixed and matched parts from kit guns and production guns. Most that do kits don't remove enough wood and locks look deep set.Others you can't tell the difference between the two.

Got me wondering about the one kit gun I have.I took the lock off and no "K".
I then remembered that the lock was sent back for an upgrade to the new style.

410-er...just to clarify, the "K" is in the stock under the lock, not on the lock. The true kit guns I have had that were known kits only had a "K" in the barrel channel, not a second one in the lock mortise area.

I rechecked. There is a "K" in the barrel channel right across from the pan.Looked in the lock mortise and no "K" on the wood there.

Re: TC Stock Question - "K" stamped under the lock

A few years ago I was lucky enough to find a very early TC flint barrel in .54 Cal.

It is a 28" Hawken barrel with brass ram rod thimbles. I had no stock for it but found a RENEGADE stock. All Renegade stocks are cut for a 1" channel regardless of caliber.

I also substituted a brass trigger guard intended for a Hawken stock since that's all I had. So it is a Hawken/Renegade hybrid.

It's a great fit all around especially the lock. Smallest lock to barrel gap I have on any flintlock. BUT, as I subsequently found out, I was lucky on this one. I bought a Hawken stock on auction and no amount of fiddling ever got almost anything to fit, especially the butt plate. It did NOT have a "K" stamped in the barrel channel either. So it can be a crap shoot with TC stocks bought after market.
