Convert SS Deerstalker to flintlock

Hello guys. I am looking at some property in this lovely state. Since you have a flintlock only season, I am looking at flintlocks if the sale goes through.

I currently have a stainless 54cal deerstalker that is a percussion cap rifle. Having read about swapping locks and changing barrels; would it make any sense to upgrade the lock on my Deerstalker to a L&R and possible swap barrels or is this a horrible idea? Could I just upgrade the lock and see how it shoots then worry about a barrel if a problem exists?

thanks
micky

I would think it would be way more economical to just buy another rifle. You can still use your perc.model for the early one week a/less muzzleloader season in Oct.and in our regular firearms season.

Re: Convert SS Deerstalker to flintlock

I agree, by the time you buy a barrel and a L&R lock you would have spent more than you would pay for a new flintlock Deerstalker, (If you shop around).

Re: Convert SS Deerstalker to flintlock

My hope was a lock and a Chambers liner to start. Shoot the rifle a bit and see if any other changes were necessary. I already have an inline I can use in the early season. One of the reason I ask about this is, I am already set up with 54 cal equipment. I cast my own, have several different 54 bullets left over to play with also.

thanks for the tips.

Re: Convert SS Deerstalker to flintlock

I agree its probably easier and cheaper to buy a 54cal flintlock..

Lock is $150ish and barrel is another $250ish. $400 give or take...I paid $215 or $225 for a use TC Hawken (12yrs ago..). But still can find nice clean used Lyman's and TCs for under $400 if you look a bit...

Welcome! Hope the sale goes your way!

The flintlock season is very special to some of us. The woods are usually a lot less crowded and its a good time!

Re: Convert SS Deerstalker to flintlock

If anyone else wants to know, I called Lyman about getting a different lock and they said the barrel must be replaced also and those two parts would cost as much a new rifle.

So now it looks like either a Lyman GPH or an Accusporter if they will make one in 54 cal.

Yep,barrel would need swapped too. Bad news on the Accusport. They only come in .50 cal.But you won,t find a higher quality rifle with top notch components in that price range which is $799.

Re: Convert SS Deerstalker to flintlock

The new flint lock and a flint barrel for the stock is going to cost more than buying a new rifle or darn close to it. Changing the plug on you existing barrel to flint isn't worth the effort either and getting a plug is going to be a major effort.

I have no idea what the thread would be on a Lyman plug and I know you can't buy one from Lyman.

I have a .54 Deerstalker in flint and just bought a Lyman Trade rifle barrel for it that was on clearance. It drops right in and even came with an extra tang.
