Given a Flintlock - some questions

Friend of mine has a few flintlocks. I had told him I was interested in getting into it and he gave me one to try out. If I like it he said I could buy it off him for $100. He didn't know too much about it's history just that he bought it used sometime in the 90's from a Local Gun Shop

Looking for some information on it if anyone can help. It says Connecticut Valley Arms Inc on the barrel and also says Spain

I do not see a model name or any other identification on it. It is a 50 Cal. Weight is about 8lbs.

Has a patch holder on the right side butt of the stock and has brass hardware.

Barrel length is 28"

Just trying to find out more about it. Recommended charges etc.

I built one like that from a kit around 1980? It was a .45 and always shot good. Sold it to help finance my 1st outboard motor. CVA hawkin.

Not a Mt. Rifle. The Mt. rifle has two wedges, and a german silver patchbox, plus a pewter nosecap.

I believe this is a CVA Hawken rifle.

Re: Given a Flintlock - some questions

You are one lucky dude! I suggest that you read some stuff from Sam Fadala for a good introduction. Also, don't discount the public library for reference materials on flintlocks and black powder. If I can give one point that is a basic rule of thumb - black powder is measured by Volume - not Weight. Be careful.

Good night Chesty, wherever you are......

Re: Given a Flintlock - some questions

Thank you all for the information. I am guessing by the replies it's worth the $100?

He did give me a small booklet on basic flintlock operation. I have to go through that. Have another local friends who called and said he would also help me out.

As long as the friend who is willing to help you out knows what he is doing, you should be good to go. There are several forums dedicated to muzzy'z and a couple to traditional muzzy's. Have fun!
