New to Muzzleloading

I just received a hand me down from my grandfather's gun collection. It is a Hawken .50 cal that he built from a kit. He has all the tools that go with it, but I have questions in regards to what I need to do from here. I've never really done any type of muzzleloading before, but would like to get set up soon for the flintlock season. Any help/suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Re: New to Muzzleloading

For me,it is better to see how things are done rather than read about it!!!!!!!!
Google it and go to places that have a videos on what you want to know or find some one to show you. It is not hard to learn and is lots of fun and a great challenge!!!!!

A copy of Lyman's Black Powder Handbook has 90% of the information you need.

Go to places like Youtube and look for videos on your make and model ML. Then afterwards, read a few manuals.

Also find an outdoor range near you and ask for live help there.

Re: New to Muzzleloading

Make sure its not loaded before you do anything else. Then go to Dixon's ML shop, tell them what you got, and ask what you need. You'll gain a lot of knowledge there.

Powder - patch - then ball.
First thing to remember.
Powder first.
