Buying black powder

I haven't had to buy powder in years but finally ran out. Stopped by cabelas to pick some up and had to get it from the background check counter. They took my id and came back out about 10 mins later with my powder and I was on my way. Is there some sort of check now to buy real black powder? I'm just wondering why they had to take my id and be gone that long. Surprised me goex doesn't come in a metal can anymore either.

Re: Buying black powder

The last time I bought black powder was when we ordered a case of it so it's been a while for me to buy it in the store. IIRC though when I last bought it in Gander Mtn. they took my ID there as well and actually marked my name down on their sheet saying that I bought a can. Whether that was a store policy or a regulation I can't say for sure. More and more regulations coming every day...

I got carded for a Bic lighter last week. Carding for BP doesn't surprise me.

Re: Buying black powder

Thank the terrorists.

Still don't get it though. You have to jump through all those hoops to get a pound of BP. But I can walk in to my local store and grab an 8# keg of shotgun powder and all they ask for is a credit card.

Re: Buying black powder

Hunting outside of PA, I would visit a lot of outdoor shops over the years, I wouldnt' have visited, looking for black powder, especially 4F.
It's a rarity some places, outside of PA.

It was a good way to find shops that also had good inventory control.

Re: Buying black powder

I got carded last month for buying a lb of Pyrodex. Didn't surprise though, since I do live in New York. I'm more surprised I can even buy it.

Re: Buying black powder

I went to buy some, but when quoted a price of over $30 a pound I passed, so don't know about the ID thing. I just decided to bulk order online and got it down to a little over $20 a pound (including shipping). Could of gotten it lower if I knew someone else that needed some and ordered more. I'm set for a while now, especially with 4f. I guess since you have to sign for delivery ID is checked then. My wife had to pick it up at the hub and had to show ID and sign for it of course
