new to big bore smoke pole

I recently pick up a T/C Renegade 54 cal. I have never owned a big bore like this before. I would like some load suggestions.

Also I plan on using this in NJ for muzzle loading season to fill my fridge with yummy venison. Since its a cap lock gun.

will hunt for food....

Start with 80 to 85 grains of 2f and see how it shoots. I use 90 in my Renegade when I shoot it.

535 roundball with a pillow ticking patch. I also use the prelubed patches with wonderlube on them from oxyoke. The 535 roundball should smack really well.

Muzzleloaders will have a sweet spot both high and low.Remember that more powder is not always better.Often a 54 will be in the 100gr of FFg range on the high side.Try both .530 and .535 RB's.TC's normally like patches of .015-.018.
Don't be afraid of trying powder charges of 60-70grs.If it groups well, use it.You should get groups at 50yd of LESS than 1 1/2".
I'm killing deer with 45's and 50grs easily. My 58 like 120grs on the high side and the deer are not any more dead than when I kill them with my 45's.
Swab between every 3 shot.Go with what you can hit with with the 1st shot out of a clean bore. That the one that counts!

The answers to all of life's questions are found in the Bible!

Re: new to big bore smoke pole

The Max load for a renegade is 120grn.

I shoot 80grn FFg w/ patched round ball and 100grn w/ the 435grn T/C maxi ball and both hit close to the same POI.

120grn will smack your cheek. This was my father's smokepole and he used to hunt w/ a buddy who had all the accessories. I had to learn all about it after he passed. He always said it really smacked his cheek. When I got a powder measure I dumpped one of his pre-measured vials and found he had been shooting around 140grn, no wonder it smacked his jaw!

Re: new to big bore smoke pole

wis bang that would smack ya in the cheek!

Ok seond question the caps I got for this gun seem tobe too small. I have RWS No, 1075 caps for this and they don't fit the nipple with out me pushing very hard to get them on the nipple. Also they seem to be crooked resting on the nipple?

I was told this gun had a #11 nipple? This stuff is all new, I was a flinter before this gun?

will hunt for food....

You need #11 caps.

Re: new to big bore smoke pole

Rws 1075 are number 11 caps. Is your nipple smashed from dry firing? Try a new nipple
