Loading For Tomorrow?

Help me out guys -

When I got home from hunting today, I fired a couple practice shots and then thoroughly cleaned the gun, on the back porch.

It's now sitting in the house, which thankfully is heated. I like the convenience of loading the gun at home, the evening before I go hunting. Then the gun stays in the house till I head out the next morning.

Then I remembered reading this in another thread -
Quote:
dont bring it from really warm to cold or vice versa...dont want it to "sweat"..
So, do I load the gun and keep it in the house tonight? Do I take it outside, let it get cold, then load it and leave it in the shed overnight? Does it matter?

Thanks........

I kill because I'm hunting, but killing is not the reason I go hunting.

Re: Loading For Tomorrow?

Taking your flinter from warm to cold is fine. Cold to warm is what causes condensation and can cause problems. So load her up and good luck.

Re: Loading For Tomorrow?

This isn't the more traditional flintlock forum, so perhaps yours is a modern percussion or inline?
If so, run a dry patch and fire three caps/primers before loading.

Re: Loading For Tomorrow?

I wrote that line lol...and I should have googled...I knew it was one way or the other but couldn't remember which it was...

I too like to load at home or camp...don't know why...lol

But once its cold don't bring it into camp when its 80..I love when the guys at camp do it and the next day can't figure out what's wrong and have hangfires...

Re: Loading For Tomorrow?

I have brought mine in from the cold, but only when really damp weather was forecast. In one case, I pulled the ball and dumped the charge.

I have the charge in it now, actually, and I was out for a short hunt Tues evening and then brought it in. The barrel didn't get cold enough, and I put my truck's heat system so it was not hot, but wasn't COLD, either. That helped ease the transition a little.

Saw a tip here about toilet paper between the frizzen and pan, so I put a fold of that in there, and a patched cleaning rod down the barrel. Pulled that out after a day or so. I check with a toothpick...as long as the main charge feels dry and "crunchy," it should go off just fine.

Re: Loading For Tomorrow?

I load up and set my flinter in the garage. I store it in the back of the truck to and from the hunt. I shoot off a round at the end of a hunt if it was damp out. During the season if I fire it off, I'll clean it up good, wipe it dry and let it sit in the basement. Load it back up right before the next hunt.
I do all of this in hopes of keeping the powder nice and dry. Can't say I've ever had a problem using this process.

Good Luck & Shoot Straight
