Flintlock firing in slow motion (video)

You don't really notice the hang fire that much until you start to slow things down. It's no wonder being a good shot with a muzzleloader takes practice.

Long travel for the flash to hit the charge in a patent breech with a coil spring lock......what kind of flint? Ffff for prime?

Anybody can shoot deer on the farm ground....You earn it in the mountains.......

Yes you can see the hang, big time. Your fire aint getting to the charge.

Try this

First, get 4F.
Second, stop making a fuse, powder does NOT go into or against the vent. Line on the bottom of the pan. Yours was almost all burned and away by the time your rifle let go.
Third, pick your vent into the charge.
Forth, invest in some sharp flints.
Fifth, if those dont solve the problem, look for the RMC touchhole liners with the allen head.

Every day you see it on the news. Another felons life needlessly spared by inaccurate fire.

Hawkens don't have a good alignment of the touch hole and the pan. I blame that on 99% of the delay. Poor design.

I assume you edited that, if you greatly expand your audio graph you'll be able to precisely measure your delay time. The flint to frizzen strike will show a distinct trace and so will the main charge ignition. Then you can try different things to improve the ignition time. I ran tests several years ago changing just a few variables and measuring the results, it took a few days and around 100 shots. Here is a narrowed sample of the audio graph showing 3 shots, a long, a medium, and a short. You can very clearly see the frizzen strike followed by the main ignition. And if I expand the graph all the way out you can measure that delay down to the millisecond.

Shooting at S Cville? Even with the delay you held pretty good until the shot. Most people drop the front of the barrel when shooting FL.

Re: Flintlock firing in slow motion (video)

Thank you for the tips. I will try them.

Yes S Connellsville

I use Windows Movie Maker to edit my videos. All I did was slow the video down. I wanted to see how bad I flinched and thought the video was interesting.

Re: Flintlock firing in slow motion (video)

Yeah the videos are cool to see what is really going on. I did the testing in my previous post about 6 years ago and I put this 10 shot sequence together showing a range of delays, looks like mostly slower to faster using the audio as a reference. The 10% speed is a repeat of the normal speed sequence.
