Bummer - sorta

So, the other week, I was toying with the idea of buying a flintlock to use during the late season.
On one of the big internet sites, I find a 54 cal flintlock, a lyman deerstalker, new for 306. Seems like a good deal and a decent gun, so I ordered it.

Well, it came yesterday. But instead of the deerstalker, they sent me a lyman great plains riffle - 54 cal flint, at the same price.

My understanding is that the gpr is a more valuable gun, and I'm sure it'll do fine. But I already miss the sling studs and am not a fan of the primitive sites........ will shoot it as soon as the rain stops.....

I kill because I'm hunting, but killing is not the reason I go hunting.

Re: Bummer - sorta

Wait a second here. You went on a website, ordered a NEW 54 cal Deerstalker for $306. That's a win right there. They then sent you a NEW 54 cal Great Plains instead ? THAT'S a DOUBLE WIN. You are blessed.

Although the Deerstalker is a more practical piece to carry around on a still-hunt.

Sling swivel ramrod pipes are available. Both in brass and blackened iron. Do a search for sling swivel pipes. They have the whole kit, for the pipe, as well as the screw for the buttstock.

Just make sure it is GPR vs. GPH. The Great Plains Hunter is a 1:28 barrel for sabots. The GPR is 1:66 (1:60?) for PRB.

If you decide you want to shoot sabots, all it takes is another barrel.

Re: Bummer - sorta

You got a heck of a deal right there.

You can have all manner of sights installed on that rifle, and with what you paid, you'll still be money ahead, considering shelf price on a GPR is aroun 550-650, depending on where you go.

My father had a set of fiber optic sights put on his GPR at Dixon's. They are extremely solid sights and quite visible in even poor light. I don't think they cost him that much, either.

Re: Bummer - sorta

Well, no tinkering with it till after the season. By then I'll have a better idea of how I feel about the gun and flintlock hunting in general.
And if I decide to stick with it, a sling and fully adjustable sights will be on order.

I kill because I'm hunting, but killing is not the reason I go hunting.
