Swing.....and a miss...
I hunted this past Saturday at letterkenny army depot. You can use an inline there but its only for does if its not your designated buck day. I was hunting an open field on the edge of a thick swampy area with railroad tracks in between. At 6am I saw a small 4 and a nice 8 walk out and go about 30 yards from me. At 745am I saw a doe pop out and start moving in my direction but at an off angle. When she went broadside at 125 yards I put the crosshairs on the shoulder and squeezed off a shot.
Right away I knew it wasn't a good shot. I immediately saw the deer do a 500 yard dash across the field. I went over to the spot, no blood or hair, nothing. I circled around for about 10-15 minutes and was confident I missed.
Ugh....In my entire life (I'm 30) I have never missed a deer with a firearm. I felt sick. My confidence was definitely shaken with my inline.
I bought it used from a member here last year, its a CVA Optima Pro with a Bergara barrel. It shoots 2in groups at 100yds consistently. I shot it about 30 times over the summer before this season. Always from a rest on a bench. I guess its back to the range for me!!! This time I'll take my hunting stool and practice shooting from it.
Me and my buddies met up later in the morning and I could have taken another 100 plus yard shot at some deer crossing the railroad tracks, my buddy shot and missed, I declined the shot because I didn't feel confident I'd connect. I left around noon and both of them killed does in the afternoon.
It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.
