Inline muzzle loading hand guns?

Anyone hunt with these? I love my cva wolf and its speed breech system. CVA offers a muzzle loading handgun of their optima rifle. 14" barrel and 17.5" overall length.

I like to take both my bow and inline with me during the early muzzle loader season and think this would be the most effective way of doing so. Right now it gets a bit much to carry bow, treestand, pack with extra clothes , and treestand.

I really think I would enjoy taking out this handgun, and using the rifle for rifle season, or may even take it for rifle.

Wondering if anyone has ever hunted with a muzzle loading handgun, and how they like it. It says it accepts up to 100 grains of powder, but I imagine that would pack a wallop and be a bit tough to hang on to.

Thanks

Re: Inline muzzle loading hand guns?

I have the TC Scout pistol and the Traditions Buck hunter pistol, a Palmetto target in-line, a CVA prospector, a Rob Lewis in line, a Yazel Ten X and an MMR Hawkeye pistol.

Mine are all percussion cap ignited not 209. Technically, the 209 pistols are not exempted as antiques under the state firearms carry and transport laws. (Section 6118) The exemption applies to matchlock, percussion and flint and firearms manufactured before 1898. Not that many LEO's would realize the difference. Still safe with a LTCF.

While inlines can more effectively consume powder, a lot of a 100 grain charge would burn up outside the muzzle as a fireball. My TC Scout is "rated" up to 100 grains as I recall. Interestingly, the Hawkeye's recommended load range stops at 70 grains. Both are exceptionally heavy guns.

What would the best scope option be? I want to use this in the early muzzleloader season as a "pack" gun

Re: Inline muzzle loading hand guns?

My TC Scout has a red dot, which I don't like that much. At muzzleloader pistol distances, a scope seems like surplus weight.

The optima v2 doesn't come with open sights on it but does come with a rail for a scope, just seemed like a better option with less hassle to put a scope on the rail, rather than buy sights and have a gun smith install them for me.

Re: Inline muzzle loading hand guns?

I got the Vortek at Cabela,s a couple months ago at a price I couldn,t pass up.The Optima is nice too but didn,t come with the sites so that was a deal breaker for me if they would have been priced the same.I wouldn,t have bought the Vortek if it didn,t have sites.I seen online thru CVA I think that you can buy the sites for the Optima and they should mount on w/out drillin or needin a smith to install.I also liked the nice hardwood on the Vortek.

Re: Inline muzzle loading hand guns?

Going to pick her up tonight. I think I may get the pro hunter scope as well. Debating on getting the 2 x 6 x 32 or the straight 4 x 32 scope for it.
