Tips for hunting in 12"+ snow

Any veterans have any tips for hunting in the deep snow? Will there rabbits even be more than 5' from their hole?

depends upon the snow... with a crust that will sustain a rabbit sure... In a powder snow rabbits sink in just like dogs and people... They will venture forth and get their paths tamped down...but you will find that they remain in one spot for long duration as evidenced by piles of pellets.

If you go ... good luck

My tip is if there is a hard crust on the snow like there is now, stay home and don't risk your dog. There will be other days.

IME- Rabbits will be sitting tight, and won't move until the dogs are right on top of them. Runs will usually be short in length- and they will limit their travels to either their well worn paths, or area with low snow levels (ditches, ect). I've only had a few full circles, before either hitting a hole, or crossing my path.

I've been out every day this week, and have had runs and seen rabbits each day. My area does not have a crust as John S. mentioned- but we have a good 12'' of soft powder.

12" of snow... I'm in the stay home and tie a fly, or make a homemade spinner camp.

when my dog was still able to hunt, this was her kind of weather. the colder and deeper the snow, the better. hunted many, many days on snowshoes. I had quite a few wet areas I hunted, where the number of holes were limited. the rabbits are there, the dog just needs to root them out. I sure miss it!

Ha guys I can remember when the snow was up to the crotch and we still went out the rabbits had tunnels under the snow.I can remember one time I thought the dogs were crazy no rabbit tracks and I was standing by a tree top and out poped a rabbit right at my feet scared the crap out of me. Those were the good old days.

Yours or the dog's ? That would be one tiresome hunt.
