1-26-14 Flushing Survey

I helped out with the flushing survey today. Our group put of a total of 31 birds on the farm we worked on. There were 13 hens, 10 roosters and 8 unknown. The birds were running and I didn't see all of them. The one area we worked I saw one bird flush and when we got to the end of the field the blocker at the end said he saw 11 birds flush.

I'm not sure if Blitz pointed this bird or not before it flushed. I was walking in the switchgrass when the rooster flushed from a food plot Blitz was in.

This rooster flushed without a point:

But the dogs did point where it came from:

We did see a few deer when we were out as well.

I don't know how the other groups did but if I hear anything I will post it. This was the only survey I can make this year. It was good to meet a few HPA members and readers of the board. I'm not well know but at least my dogs are.

Re: 1-26-14 Flushing Survey

Our group flushed 25. We flushed 21 on the Wentzel farm and 4 at Crows. There were more cockbirds than hens but it was close. I flushed with Bwire last year. I have the yellow lab. We saw a lot of tracks. The birds were in great shape.

There's hunting and there's hunting with a good dog

Good to hear you found a good number of birds. I remember you from before.

We worked one field and didn't flush a bird but the blocker at the end saw 5 run out.

Bwire, we're gonna miss you at Central Susquehanna. Our flushing count will probably be much lower now.

I doubt that but thanks. I wish I could make it up but the days just didn't work out.

And that's with some very experienced dogs...you gotta love WILD Ringnecks!

It's breeding,training...and something unknown.

Re: 1-26-14 Flushing Survey

I do not know what group I was with, but we worked a 55 acre farm at the very western point of the recovery area. We put up 4 roosters and three hens, along with a boatload of rabbits. Several others birds were seen, but we thought they may have been counted earlier, so we didn't recount.

This was my first survey and I'm really glad I went, I was the guy in the green bibs........

My only concern, not being an expert by any means, was that the farm we were on had good cover, but all the surrounding farms were almost completly void of any cover.

I kill because I'm hunting, but killing is not the reason I go hunting.

Glad to see a few birds are still out there. With less westnile virus this year I was worried they may been cleaned up. Good job.
