late season squirrel

Has anyone been hunting squirrel? I think I am going to head out Saturday. I find it a lot more difficult to find them in the late season. Does anyone do anything different or hunt in different locations in the late season?

Re: late season squirrel

Ive been going out when the weather hasnt been too brutal. Some days I walk more, Mainly just learning some new woods and havent seen many that way but found spots where they were diggin, or just tracks everywhere. I sat in those areas at either first light or a few hours before dark. Thats the only way Ive gotten any so far in the late season. Middle of the day I just dont see anything at all. Even on the warmer then normal days.

Re: late season squirrel

Late season it seems they are out from about 8am until 10am. Then they come back out about an hour before dark.

I agree with Gary on this. Find a group of squirrel nest and camp out for a while. Move from nest Ares to nest area. Scout and find more and keep it in mind for next time. If the squirrels were not harvested from when you saw them in early season, they will still be there as their food stashes are still there.

I wouldn't hunt on windy days or days with significant precipitation. I have seen some midday if the weather was bad in the am. I will be going out the last month a few times once grouse is out. I love squirrel hunting. I'll be missing my 17 though. Better get used to my 22 again

Re: late season squirrel

Since we had no acorns this year, the squirrels around here have been hitting the walnuts pretty hard.

Re: late season squirrel

normally when I try to find squirrel hunting spots I look for areas that have nuts other than acorns. And if I find walnut, that is usually where I will spend the majority of my time. That is my plan for Saturday too. Hopefully they are hungry

Re: late season squirrel

I went out today and got 3 squirrels, missed a few others.
It was a nice afternoon so I figured I'd give it a shot at
my favorite spot.

I'd rather be fishing or hunting!
