PGC day old Hen Pheasant program

http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal...=819074&mode=2

Anyone ever see this/participate?

Wonder if you can use these birds for releasing, but also dog training? Would you need the permit for that?

I am talking letting the birds go, In hunting season, and the same day running your dogs on them, not putting them in cages, bird launchers, or other training methods, Just releasing them, and hunting them the same day.

I wonder also if you can release the hens into male bird only areas? I could see this being fun for training your dog in the late season when most of the male birds have been shot off. Obviously if you are hunting in a male only area you could not shoot these birds but would be fun for your dogs to mess with, and train over, and would mean a guarantee of dog work in the late season

Might even help make some baby ring necks in the spring...maybe....maybe..

Just a thought

The birds need to be released on land to open to public hunting. You can't plant any PGC birds, all need to be released to an area with decent enough cover. If you are really interested in it I can give you some information.

I have a friend who has land that is part of a program with the game commission. The pgc stocks birds on this land and it is open to public hunting. The only thing is that it would be in a Rooster only area. I am contemplating it, but need to figure out how big of pen I would need to create and such first.

Be forewarned, it's quite an undertaking. I certainly don't think you can do it alone.

Re: PGC day old Hen Pheasant program

Taking care of day old chicks is a lot of work. I've done it the past couple years and the first 6 weeks is the hardest part. I check on them quite often and temperature is the key. Do your research and use some type of heat source that can be controlled, even heat lamps with a thermostat works out better than heat lamps along.
