Piles of grouse droppings

I've found numerous places where it appears grouse have spent much of their time. Usually along the side of a log or rock, large piles of droppings. Is this where they roost for the evening? Or are these created during the day? Wondering when the best time to find the grouse in these locations would be?

Re: Piles of grouse droppings

Grouse can actually snow roost, and have been found to stay in the same spot for days. I have yet to witness a burried flush, buy read z book where the author describes it as an ice Phoenix erupting into the sky. My new years day hunt post has a photo of these areas your talking about.

I believe they will roost on the ground with snow and use it as insulation.

Re: Piles of grouse droppings

I have found several snow roosts while deer hunting over the years. Most have taken me by surprise enough that if I had a shot gun I would not get a shot of with all the snow flying.

Think before you share your thoughts!!!

Re: Piles of grouse droppings

This time of year I find more Snow Roosts than anything. Today we found more snow roosts than birds unfortunately.

What time of year are you finding these piles?

If you enjoy hunting please find a way to give back to the sport. Our children will thank you.

Re: Piles of grouse droppings

I found one about 10 days ago before the snow. The other was found on Thursday.
