After much discussion, I feel the BOC got this one wrong.
Perhaps it is the near lifelong start of the squirrel season when a MD resident. Like clockwork, Squirrel came in on Oct 7th or the closest saturday. You could set your clock by it.
Never did I or others I hunted with find any squirrels lactating. But, that was the reason given for the no vote in April.
This is a hunter issue. We can give a strong and clear direction to the BOC to readdress this season. There is no reason it should not open the first of October.
If they are concerned about the heavy foliage and bow hunters, make it shotgun only till mid month. The rules and methods are in their total control.
The end result is, this very abundant animal is a stepping stone animal that you and I - and hopefully our kids and grandkids can learn the basics with. There is a lot of fieldcraft and general knowledge to be had with hunting this woodland creature. They are tasty as well!
As important, for those a bit older, it is a return to the days of our youth and the simple pleasure of small game hunting before the major season divert us away.
Please take the time to let the BOC know they need to return to this issue and this time pass it.
