Squirrel Hunting with Dogs

Any dog hunters out there that have dedicated squirrel dogs, like curs or feist? If so what breed do you use?

Re: Squirrel Hunting with Dogs

Yea getting to be more and more around. I have an OMCBA she has Jukebox, Boni Beti, Thunder, Toots Dale/Toots Candy. She is blue like your screen name. There are treeing curs not far and some treeing fiest not far from here. Was out this morning and didn't see hardly any squirrel tracks in the snow. Only got one tree in a den tree that was hollow they whole way up it. Wish I could go out more today but you know Christmas stuff.

You canít get them if you ainít in the woods!!

I do. There are plenty of guys out there just have to look a little to find them sometimes. I have 4 dogs right now, all are curs, 1 treeing cur and 3 mountain curs. I do like to have a little hound in mine.

Re: Squirrel Hunting with Dogs

I've not run into anyone here local who squirrel hunts with a dog...but that's ok I guess. I have a young feist pup that I am working with and will be taking to the woods for the first time soon.

Re: Squirrel Hunting with Dogs

Falcon used to run his BMC for tree rats, I don't see him post much any more.

I picked up my black mouth cur from a shelter in WV (neat KY line) with hopes of hunting her, but that didn't really pan out. She's very skittish and her previous owners must have really beat her. She also will take off at the first sight of a gun (sight, not even sound).

With that said shes an absolute wonderful dog and a great addition to the family.

Here is a picture of Dixie and my son at our cabin.

And here's a few older pictures after I got home from the long drive to pick her up. (15 hour round tip)

Don't Tread On Me is what it says and I'll take that to my grave.

Re: Squirrel Hunting with Dogs

That is either one little dog or one huge squirrel. Either way, very cool. Thanks for sharing.

My young drahthaar has tracked & treed a few squirrels (matter of fact, yesterday he barely missed catching one by the tail) enough that I'd be interested in trying to train him to become an effective squirrel dog. Never done it though.

Had some old timer tell me something about my lab and retrieving, or bird hunting. He said either "Feathers not fur" or "feathers before" Do you think the dog could go on a wild goose chase while grouse hunting or something if it came across squirrel scent and possibly ruin a good bird hunt.
