Day 1 Extended Grouse Season

Had a wonderful day in the PA grouse woods...about 6-8" of fluffy snow which made it hard to cover a lot of ground.

The first bird Lilly found was about 5 minutes into the hunt. There were no tracks as the bird was holed up under a large log and flushed straight out giving me a perfect shot, a beautiful mature grouse.

The next half hour or so produced no birds but we did find a few partial snow caves...again no tracks anywhere which told me the birds were not moving on the ground much in the deep snow and were probably roosting in snow caves and budding in the trees.

About an hour into the hunt, Lilly went on a hard point at the edge of this clearcut. These birds were out feeding and Lilly trailed them for about 100 yards into the open woods. Usually when this happens the ending is finding several flush marks in the snow.

However, there was a small patch of mountain laurel in the open woods...Lilly finally set up on these birds about 30 yards from the mountain laurel.

As I approached, 4 birds busted out of the cover and within an hour I was done...2 birds with two shots, which rarely ever happens to me.

The rest of the afternoon was spent taking more pictures and finding a few more birds. Lilly found one under these hemlocks.

The flush...

For the hotspotters...X marks the spot

Another point by Lilly...

Hercules club, one of my favorite things in the grouse woods, except when I grab one by mistake...

Thanks for tagging along...

Nice job Miss Lily and Mr. Barberry sir. Every picture I saw, I thought to myself "I know that spot". But soon realized that every photo I thought I recognized was miles or even counties away from the prior one.

Guess that goes to show the locations may change, but the cover that holds grouse is fairly consistent.

Thanks and congrats, Barberry. I especially loved that shot of the grouse snow angel. Truly awesome.
