Some late season pictures

Even though the snow was a little crusty I took the dogs out for about an hour after work. Nittany and Blitz did their best but it was tough to cover some of the ground. They did have an unproductive point in a food plot and we saw bird tracks but we couldn't produce anything. They tried to go in the switchgrass but it was tough with the grass bent over, snow and ice. Some of the cover:

We worked towards a partially frozen creek but it didn't stop the dogs so I followed them. We worked across a cut bean field and Blitz had his nose in the air. Then I saw this:

Its hard to see him but he is in front of the light cover.

I ended up flushing out a covey of quail that were liberated in the first week of October. Most of the birds flew into the woods but one single went left.

We didn't find any pheasants and I didn't fire a shot but it was great to be out. The dogs enjoyed it, too.

Re: Some late season pictures

Nice pics. Glad to hear the quail are still around.

Willie and I went out for a fast hour this morning. The crusty snow was hard on him and it cut his ankles up a bit. He did manage to find a hen but that was it.

If you enjoy hunting please find a way to give back to the sport. Our children will thank you.

You let those quail go in early October, but, but, but, I thought the avian predators were supposed to get everything!

I did see a hawk flying in the area with something in its talons. But it wasn't any type of bird that it caught.

The quail can make it into the summer but I don't know what happens after that. I've never seen signs of quail nesting but I'll keep looking.
