Ground conditions!

Deer season is finally over but here in the south east we have a icy crust over a few inches of snow! I will run the dogs in soft snow but not this stuff, not worth tearing up the pads and risking serious injury on the ice.

What are the ground conditions like in other parts of the state, is anyone able to get back out after small game this week?

Re: Ground conditions!

I am concerned about the dogs on Saturday, we are having our youth hunt at my club and if the snow is hard and crusted it will be a problem for the dogs.

Re: Ground conditions!

Based on your comments here I guess you guys didn't get yesterdays snowfall. We got roughly 5 fresh inches yesterday and last night. I had the dogs out first thing this morning to run off the last two weeks they spent laying around on the couch. The snow hung heavily on every branch and bush but they loved it. Tomorrow we can hunt again.

What part of the state are you in? We got the snow but late evening it turned to freezing rain and made a real mess of everything.

Re: Ground conditions!

Northeast PA Pike county we didn't get much freezing rain, stayed a touch colder I guess. Just shoveled the driveway and had the dogs out burning off some energy for about two hours, no problems light fluffy snow.

Re: Ground conditions!

Northern Erie co got lots of fluffy snow, so much that the beagles will be swimming til it packs down a bit.

Re: Ground conditions!

Even if there's no crust on top I have trouble getting around in deep snow anymore. Don't know how much we got up at our camp but if it's too much it'll be problematic for me. I'll head to Maryland for their late woodcock season though. Never much snow down there at all.
