Ringnecks on the road

I was driving home from work yesterday and driving through State Game Lands 82 along route 160 in southern Somerset County. I saw 2 ringnecks standing along the road! I see they survived hunting and predators so far but standing along the road won't help their survival.

The horizon is your starting point.

Nice to know that some have survived. I can't wait until the season opens again.

Re: Ringnecks on the road

Saw 4 ringnecks during deer season.

Some made it through the early seasons.

I saw four hens together right next to the road over in jefferson Co. a few days ago. They seemed almost half tame as they puttered around there even though I slowed down to watch them.

We call those Ditch Chickens.

Re: Ringnecks on the road

We saw one this past Wednesday standing on a tram road on the edge of the Tamarack swamp. I believe the local sportsmen's club raises them in the area and this guy was an escapee. We've seen them in the same area before. I don't hunt them anymore but they're kinda cool to see....and if one of my dogs points one of them when I'm hunting the swamp, I'll momentarily go back to being a pheasant slayer!!

Re: Ringnecks on the road

They often frequent the roadsides. I always assume they're picking at grit. Plus where I often see them roadside near me there's good strips of cover along the roadsides and I think they just come out there along the edges of nearby cover. I actually saw one today while relocating to a different portion of the farm I was deer hunting on. Made a mental note for the dog & I to head back out (saw 2 more on this farm a few days earlier too.)

Re: Ringnecks on the road

Rumor has it that the "ditch chickens" are going south for the winter. Everyone knows it's easier to get a ride along the road than in the fields
