a surprise today

as we were leaving a duck hunting spot this morning the dogs flushed a large WOODCOCK from the shore line.

BTW, this was a southern facing shore line & some of the snow was melted.

I was startled, couldnt believe a Doodle would be here with the snow & ice.
never before have I seen a Doodle this late in the year with this type of weather with snow on the ground.

Re: a surprise today

But not really that much smaller...anyone who can judge size on a single flushing bird is a way better man than me...

If I see a doe and twins coming thru I can usually tell which is bigger. but let a single come in and I just lose all reference to compare.

Re: a surprise today

I can remember seeing woodcock during doe season back when it was after the two week buck season. I'm convinced that if there are a few spring seeps around a bird or two can survive a winter here, but I've been wrong before.

Re: a surprise today

whole pheasant hunting two week before deer season or so my dad kicked a odd bird along a lake in Chester Co. he has shot and flushed his fair of woodcocks and when telling me about there day said something just seemed off about the bird and it just didn't seem the right size or flight pattern for a woodcock to his experience. we are convinced it was a snipe after showing him the pictures and his recollection of cock flight and looks compared to the way the snipe was.
