I went to Maine this past October for the first time to chase grouse. The hunting was flat out amazing, there were grouse everywhere. The cover was tons of young woods and old abandoned apple orchards. Any time we got into apple trees there was always a few grouse, even if it was just a couple trees out in the middle of nowhere. Got into a decent amount of woodcock aswell, most of them were on the edges of skidder trails. The skidders had made deep ruts that held moisture making the ground super soft perfect for woodcock.

Heard this guy drumming while out hiking on Sunday (can't hunt on Sunday there either). We were lucky enough to find him and get some pictures of him doing his thing. This was one the best moments of the trip, I've never seen a grouse drumming before.
I'd say yes and no. In the areas such as the abandoned apple orchards they get hunted hard by the locals and the birds are just as spooky as here in PA. In the more remote areas they held tighter than the PA birds.
Nice pics, looks like you had a great time. Did you run into many traps up there? We ran into more traps in two weeks up there than I have in all the years I've hunted in Pa. Maybe we were just unlucky.
