Early Rabbit Season Numbers

Well, the early season is now history and the dogs are on their two week vacation. Might run them on Sunday weather permitting.

I had the dogs out a lot more before the season started but managed about 20-25 hours with a gun in my hand.

These are my observations...
Rabbits seen on the circle...15
Rabbits circled and not seen...lots
Rabbits seen that were jumped by the dogs...5
Rabbits jumped for the dogs...0
Rabbits shot on the jump...0
Woodcock passed...2
Tek 1 antenna broken...2
Fully imbedded ticks...3
Multi flora rose thorns removed...lots
Shots fired...2
Rabbits killed...2
Average cost per rabbit...~$1800
Shooting a bunny circled by good hounds...priceless

So, how was your early season?

Re: Early Rabbit Season Numbers

Been out 7 times. Was warm in October and did not even go out till the second week.

17 rabbits in the bag.

Tons of misses. We bagged 4 Thanksgiving morning that averaged 4 shots per rabbit and we were only out 2 hours.

Longest run 40-45 minutes with a harvest.

Its been thick, all the rain really has the briars in full form this fall. Hoping for some snow for second season and looking forward to getting onto some properties we can;t hunt till after late muzzle loader is over.

RIP Tuff 98-11, So many hunts, so many good times!

Re: Early Rabbit Season Numbers

We hunted 5 times and we killed 17 so far. i spent to much time scouting and hunting bear and it really took away from my rabbit time. we got 78 last year and i dont see that happening agian this year with the slow start

Re: Early Rabbit Season Numbers

Got 21 rabbits missed 2. Longest chase 2.5 hours. I had a dog tear a knee ligament at the end of September so my hunting hours were down with only 1 healthy dog. Last year I got 31 rabbits with 4 misses. The year before my best year ever with 41 kills and 4 misses.

Got 11 squirrel with 1 miss. No buck but 2 brothers were successful on bucks.

Got 23 cottontails so far, 9 pheasant, 2 grouse and 35 snowshoe hare. Not a bad start to the early season.

Re: Early Rabbit Season Numbers

So far this year we are at 15 Cottontails, 35 hare, 2 Grouse, 2 Pheasant, 2 woodcock and a turkey!! Haha. A pretty good mixed bag.

We had 33 in the bag before Christmas last year so we are behind. The running just hasn't been as good this year for us. I'll also have a few days less hunted this season vs last, but none the less, a mediocre bunny season so far.
