What's your choice of pellet size for squirrel?

Our whole family is planning to go squirrel hunting in a couple weeks for the first time. We have a .22 rifle and 20 gauge shotgun.

For the shotgun, we already have some #6 shells and some #8 shells. I read recently that #7 1/2 don't penetrate the skin but still hit hard enough to kill a squirrel. That sounds ideal, but I was wondering what your opinion is. Would you choose #6 or #8 for squirrel, and why?

Thanks in advance!

#6 is the smallest I'd go. Less pellets, more energy equals quicker kills and not as many pellets to dig out.

For farther shots, some old timers use #4 to extend range, full choke.

I still have some #5's laying around that were custom loaded for squirrel. I think back in the day this was the preferred shot size but I haven't seen it on shelves in a long time.

A squirrel skin is TOUGH!Smallest #6 perfect #4.

The answers to all of life's questions are found in the Bible!

When hunting then with a shotgun, I've always compromised with #5's

I agree with the others, 6's or 4's through a tight choke.

Eh...wot?
