Any of ya'll know anything about bird bands?

I got a couple hours this afternoon to go stumble through a swamp that has been stocked with pheasants in the past. I was hoping to get a flush or atleast see some feathers. Well i didn't see any sign so not sure if it got stocked this year.

Well I was falling my way through a thick, wet, nasty, beaver ridden swamp. I went to cross a mote to get off an island i got stuck on for the 749th time and I happened to see something shiny sticking out of the mud under the water. I scooped it up on my way through and realized its a bird band! It is still closed, and there was no sign of any bird or bird parts anywhere.

It is a pretty small silver band. It says:

CALL 1-800-327-BAND
1116-28257
WRITE LAUREL MD 20708 USA

Does anyone know what any of that means? Even though i wasn't lucky enough to see what it was attached to, should i call the number? I would like to. Can they tell me what bird and when it was on?

Pretty exciting find, never seen one before. Can't believe i even saw the little thing!

Also, does the Maryland town mean that the bird came all the way from Maryland??? I'm in 3a. Not far at all from the NY border.

Yes, call it, that's what it means. Let them know you found the band in a swamp but no bird whatsoever. The fowl could've died and rotted away awhile ago and you got really lucky finding the band. They will tell where & when the band was put on and the species & sex of the waterfowl it was put on.

I don't think that means it is the town it was banded in and remember waterfowl migrate maybe thousands of miles twice a year.

Call it in. Lets us know what info you get back. That's a pretty lucky find.

That address and phone # is the federal bird banding laboratory.

When you are up to your butt in alligators, it is hard to remember your intent was to drain the swamp. Stay focused!

Re: Any of ya'll know anything about bird bands?

Update:

I called the band in. The woman was very nice. They will be sending me a certificate via email with the species, sex, and age of the bird. She was able to already tell me that the bird was banded in September of 2011, and that it was banded in Allentown NY, in Allegheny county. That is approximately 30-40 miles away from where I found the band. I will update again once i get additional info.

Re: Any of ya'll know anything about bird bands?

Final update:

I got the certificate via email.

The bird was banded on 9-6-11
It was also hatched in 2011.
It was a female wood duck.

Pretty neat stuff! It's interesting to think what could've happened to the bird? This is not a common duck hunting place. I wonder if it's demise came from a bird of prey? I wonder when? Lot's of things that we'll never know.
