Questions about SGL and Orange

Hi all,

I'm new to PA, hunting, and the forum. I just moved to the Philly area and I had a few questions that I need answering before Saturday.

1. Has anyone hunted SGL 234 and how crowded is it on opening day or the day after? It's the closest SGL to me and the only land I've scouted. Will Evansburg State Park be more or less crowded?

2. What counts as 250 sq. inches of orange? I've got an upland game bird vest that has the orange top half. That combined with a hat is about 300 sq. inches (I really did measure it), but all of the pictures in the digest show full orange vests.

Thanks for your help!

Brad

250 combined total on the head, chest and back. Basically as long as you have orange front and back & a hat you're good to go.

Re: Questions about SGL and Orange

never been on 234 on opening day
but as you stated ,,its close to philly.
the day after is sunday.no hunting allowed
numbers should drop on mon but there will still be plenty of hunters in the field.

keep in mind pheasant release locations are the only places you'll find birds to hunt so anyone hunting pheasants will be at the locations.

Re: Questions about SGL and Orange

234 will be a zoo on opening day, doesn't matter if you go to the Linfield tract or the North tract. Evansburg shouldn't be too crowded, considering they don't stock pheasants there anymore. Without the pheasants, there really isn't much there. You might bump the occasional rabbit or woodcock and squirrels numbers are decent, but that's about it.

Re: Questions about SGL and Orange

I hunt Evansburg for squirrel, rabbit (sometimes) and woodcock (sometimes) They used to stock pheasant but they no longer do.

If you're interested in meeting up sometime for squirrel I can show you a few spots.

SGL 234 - go during the week or late in the day. Early morning opening day is going to be a madhouse. The day they stock... madhouse.

It's like trout fishing in PA on opening day and when they stock. Sad really, people follow the truck and call that hunting/fishing

The birds will still be there after the crowds have gone. If you can swing it, hit either part of SGL 234 Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon.

Re: Questions about SGL and Orange

I'm in the same boat. I've lived here for 3 years, but would always go home (Western NY) to hunt. This year, I'm hunting down here and want to get into some small game!

I'd love to meet up with someone who is willing to show me what Evansburg has to offer.

Re: Questions about SGL and Orange

234 is a good place for birds its crowded almost all of the time since it is not very big. Blue Marsh is also another very good place it gets alot of people but its large enough everyone isnt on top each other.
