Woodcock hunting

I used to hunt woodcock a lot down in NC. I hunted mostly along a large river (the Yadkin) and could always reliably produce flushes year after year. The last time I hunted them was around 2000.

Now that I've relocated to Pennsylvania last year I've acquired a pup (field-bred english cocker) and we headed out today for the woodcock opener. We hunted the bottom land of Indian creek hard to no avail. Indian creek is much, much smaller than the Yadkin.

All I know about woodcock hunting has transgressed alongside a large river (Yadkin).

Do woodcock migrate along large river flyways or do they just head south and hit bottom-land type cover along the way?

I realize they simply may not be here yet but thought I'd ask anyhow.

I plan to head back to Indian Creek each weekend of the season to see what turns up because the cover there is screaming textbook "woodcock cover". Or at least what "I" think is textbook "woodcock cover".

Thanks,
Jim

Re: Woodcock hunting

If your dog hasn't been introduced to woodcock, he might just be missing them...I remember hunting NJ for woodcock with my GSP. Everyone was shooting wc except me. It took him awhile to figure it out and it didn't happen that day.

Re: Woodcock hunting

Most of the woodcock we seem to find are traditional bottom lands/ marshy areas.. But also a lot in small birch stands on field edges.

Only the owners of a GSP would truly understand, "If I fits, I sits".
