Pheasant question?

Why do ringneck pheasants reproduce successfully in PA but if you a little farther south into, say, Virginia pheasants do not successfully reproduce?

Any idea why?

Re: Pheasant question?

Do they have wild pheasants in VA? If not there's at least part of your answer.

Re: Pheasant question?

They do not reproduce successfully in PA unless they have the proper habitat to do so. At one time they did have the habitat. Virginia does not have the same soil type as PA, pheasant do better with a limestone soil, which PA has a lot of.

When you are up to your butt in alligators, it is hard to remember your intent was to drain the swamp. Stay focused!

Re: Pheasant question?

Here in North Carolina it is a documented fact ringneck pheasants cannot, even in good habitat, successfully reproduce in the wild.

Did not know about the limestone soil.

Never knew pheasants could not reproduce in the south until I moved here.

Re: Pheasant question?

Cape Lookout NC used to have pheasant that were reproducing. Hunted them when I was in the USMC at Cherry Point. Not sure what the population is doing these days....
