Ever wonder how many eggs a grouse lays?

I guess this many. Was cool to see this. She let me get two feet from her before giving me a heart attack. As I looked down to catch my breath i saw this. Anyone know if this is a big brood, average. It seemed like a lot of eggs to me.

I was also shocked she was probably the smallest grouse I had ever seen. It is hard for me to believe that the nest in such a wide open space. I know my lab is not the greatest grouse dog in the world but she can definetly smell them. Hard to believe that make it at all considering the nest on the ground. I am sure that predators can smell them on the ground and come in and eat many grouse eggs. I wish her the best of luck. Wish I could have got a phot of her a well.

Peterson`s Guide to Bird Nest : 9-12,sometimes up to 14. 1 egg laid daily until the clutch completed.Incubation by the female only,21-24 days to hatch.

Nature can teach us alot.

I read somewhere how many from a clutch of ten will make it to maturity. It was, as I recall, a pretty low percentage. Very cool find!!

Re: Ever wonder how many eggs a grouse lays?

I know they used to look at 80% hatches in pheasants and that depended on the weather. 50% of that reached maturity.
Those numbers would mean 5 or 6 of that nest would make it!!
