After 3 years of ND pheasant hunting I am maybe looking for a different and closer bird hunt next fall. Anyone hunt self-guided and stay in a cabin in Maine? Anything to expect or look out for? I only need a basic place to stay up there and a someone to point me towards the woods, don't need a guide or anything. Thanks in advance.
Wherever somebody’s strugglin’ to be free,
Look in their eyes ma you’ll see me.
I've been to Maine a few times for birds. Along the midcoast and in the Allagash. Stayed a couple times at Robinson's in Dennysville - they rent cabins that are fully equipped with kitchens, heat , showers. If you have a Maine Gazateer Bill Robinson (owner) will point out likely spots to go. Although flushed several grouse there, woodcock predominate along the coast - should have no problem putting up 20-30 birds if the flight is in. http://robinsonscottages.com/
In the Allagash there were more grouse than woodcock. The Allagash is a big area. We paid for a semi-guided hunt which meant 1 full day of guiding. We did this just to get an idea of where to find the birds and how they hunt them there. The rest of the week we were on our own - again Sean (owner) will point out places to go on a topo. No matter where I've been I had a great time. Plenty of birds - not necessarily behind every tree - still have to hunt hard at times. But certainly worth the trip. http://allagashguideservice.com/
Not sure how long of a drive it is ND, but Dennysville Maine and the Allagash are still a 12-13 hr drive from NE PA.
I'll be going back in 2013. Haven't decided where yet. I really like Robinson's but again mostly woodcock and some grouse. Allagash guide service is nice to if you don't want to cook your own meals.
