Any advice on finding a black squirrel ?

Im planning a taxidermy project. My plan is to mount a fox, grey, red, and black squirrel all in one scene. The only one that will be difficult for me to obtain is a black,as I live in SWPA. Was planning a day trip north. There are some game lands in the OIl City area, I saw one dead on the road just north of there this summer. Just need one. Anybody hunt these areas, seen any ?

Hopefully someone will chime in about seeing one in an area that you can hunt. I've never seen a live black one in the wild, but know they're out there.

It may be easier to pop a grey squirrel and die the fur black. Just not as fun.

If you enjoy hunting please find a way to give back to the sport. Our children will thank you.

I see a lot of them around Venango county. President area seems to have a lot of black squirrels.

Thanks for the input. Im hoping to get out later this week, just trying to formulate a plan. Its hard going in blind, but the only way to find out for sure is to do it.

I know where two of them live out back of cranberry.

The problem is that I don't know what I don't know.

Re: Any advice on finding a black squirrel ?

One poster mentioned the President area. I to have seen them in that area. If you turn right when your heading north on 62 just before you cross the blue bridge before Tionesta. That is a gated dirt road that is open in hunting season and is owned by collins pines. All open to hunting. I have seen them a couple times crossing that road in the past. Might be a place to check out. I have seen alot of them in the hills around Goerge B. Stevenson dam in Cameron county.

Many years ago I had a Fox, grey and black squirrel mounted on a limb off a tree. I had a local taxidermest from across the line in Ohio do it. Was a neet idea but a poor mount job. After several years it ended up in the garbage.

Good Luck

I seem to recall an of timer telling me to look for them near pine tree stands. Not sure if that helps
