Squirrel Calls?

Hope to get out next Friday-Sat for some late season squirrel hunting. I know when I was a kid I had some squirrel calls & thought they worked(mebbie just in my head )

Any squirrel hunters use calls & what ones do you like?

Thanks.

Re: Squirrel Calls?

When I do go out for squirrels not to often I just rub to dimes together...

As Charles Barkley says, "I may be wrong, but I doubt it".

Re: Squirrel Calls?

You can do it with your mouth. Listen to how a squirrel sounds. Hard to explain. Hold your teeth together, close one side of your lip and open the other side, get some spit and hold your tongue against your molars on the open side of your mouth and make a vacuum in your mouth and use your tongue to pull the air through your teeth. It is easy but hard to explain. Squirrel are at times territorial and it seems to work sometimes. Could be just in my head but I would do it out of shear boredom. I ain't one much for sitting. As long as the good Lord give me the ability I walk as much as I can. Don't do it anymore. I use dogs.

You canít get them if you ainít in the woods!!

Re: Squirrel Calls?

I don't hold my teeth together to make the reproduction. However, what ever works.

Calling works well on squirrels that are already barking to keep them barking until one can sneak in to get close. Also it is a good trick to get them to look around a tree when they are hiding on the other side, come down the tree to expose themselves from the heavy top of tree leaf canopy and it works well mid to late morning to fire up a squirrel after they are feed up, bored and looking for something to do.

Re: Squirrel Calls?

I use a call forget the name but it is one of those that has the rubber bulb on the end. It works good on greys but fox squirrells seem to run away from it. I have been hunting woods that have yotes there and it doesn't work well there. It seems like the squirrels don't make a lot of noise there.

I don't think the coyotes deter squirrels from barking. Probably the opposite. When a Squirrel sees things come into its territory they often bark an alarm. Sometimes several will bark in several different locations.

I have hunting the state of IN for squirrels for many years and shot several barking squirrels and the coyotes are thick there.

I have seen squirrels bark at hawks, turkeys, deer, dogs, me, noise and many times for no apparent reason.

When I am turkey are deer hunting I am always give my attention to a barking squirrel.

Only had any luck with my rubber end squirrel call...threw mine away in the 60's. A squirrel was on the other side of the tree doing that round and round trick opposite side, so I threw my squirrel call on the other side of the tree. it made a noise and the squirrel came around to me...the only and last time it worked.
