Lookin forward to Saturday
I used to love goin squirrel hunting at camp when I was younger. In fact, the first game I ever shot was at camp, a nice black squirrel.
My dad isn't as into hunting as I am, so when I was growing up "our" idea of hunting was to go out for squirrel a few times in Oct/Nov, then hunt first day of rifle and the 2 Saturdays.
So each year when small game opened up, I'd be super excited. I loved squirrel hunting and we always did really well.
As I got older I realized there was much more to our sport that I was missing out on. I started hunting spring turkey, and three years ago I got into archery.
Hunting archery has completely changed me as a hunter. I hunt harder than ever, I understand deer better, practice scent control, etc. But one thing I really miss, is the squirrel huntin. Between work, wife, and child, I have a very limited opportunity to hit the woods. Deer hunting has taken presidence over small game for years now.
But this weekend that's not the case. I got a trophy buck last archery season, and this year I got a very respectable mountain buck @ camp. So even though I still have a doe tag, my bow is staying home this weekend and I'm taking my shotgun for a walk - on the same mountain where I shot that very first black squirrel when I was 12. I'm gettin "back to my roots," I guess you could say.
In the immortal words of Bart Scott, "Can't wait!"
Hunters lie in wait. Fishermen wait and lie.
