Lookin forward to Saturday

I used to love goin squirrel hunting at camp when I was younger. In fact, the first game I ever shot was at camp, a nice black squirrel.

My dad isn't as into hunting as I am, so when I was growing up "our" idea of hunting was to go out for squirrel a few times in Oct/Nov, then hunt first day of rifle and the 2 Saturdays.

So each year when small game opened up, I'd be super excited. I loved squirrel hunting and we always did really well.

As I got older I realized there was much more to our sport that I was missing out on. I started hunting spring turkey, and three years ago I got into archery.

Hunting archery has completely changed me as a hunter. I hunt harder than ever, I understand deer better, practice scent control, etc. But one thing I really miss, is the squirrel huntin. Between work, wife, and child, I have a very limited opportunity to hit the woods. Deer hunting has taken presidence over small game for years now.

But this weekend that's not the case. I got a trophy buck last archery season, and this year I got a very respectable mountain buck @ camp. So even though I still have a doe tag, my bow is staying home this weekend and I'm taking my shotgun for a walk - on the same mountain where I shot that very first black squirrel when I was 12. I'm gettin "back to my roots," I guess you could say.

In the immortal words of Bart Scott, "Can't wait!"

Hunters lie in wait. Fishermen wait and lie.

Yeah, I understand the excitement after not going for so long. One thing I enjoy about squirrel hunting after deer hunting, is you can really let your hair down. It's like a breath of fresh air, without all the pressures that come with archery hunting deer. Good luck and have fun.

Exactly, zrabfan. The thrill of the hunt and the serenity of the wilderness will still be present, but the pressure and "stuffiness" will be non existent. Thanks!

DeErie, funny you just posted this. I am going pheasant hunting Saturday [Preserve hunt}, but I have not piked up the shotgun in 12 years because of the " Archery Addiction" I have acquired. I can't wait either. Good Luck.

Camp life,it don't get much better!

Re: Lookin forward to Saturday

DeErie, your situation sounds exactly like mine. Dad took me out those same days and if we didn't get anything then "that was it". Got into archery and was addicted for 3 years until I got a bird dog last year. Now it's hard to drop the shotgun for the bow!

Enjoy every moment you can get out. My daughter is only 1 and I can't wait to take her for nature walks and hopefully get her into hunting down the road!
