Help!

Ok so I'm fairly new to hunting in general, so I'm still learning. I am hunting with a remington 870 that I got on black friday. I went out for deer with no luck and I am now trying for small game. I've been out 7 times already and have not seen one thing. I've tried games lands 51, 296, and 245 hoping to see a rabbit, pheasant, or grouse. I do not have a dog to hunt so I dont expect to see much. I have also done hours upon hours of internet research on these critters. The reason why I am posting this is in search of some advice from you guys. Could anyone lead me in the right direction?

Trapping goals:
1/5 Red fox
0/5 Gray fox
0/5 Coyote
8/20 Raccoon
0/15 Muskrat
2/0 Possum
0/0 Skunk

Re: Help!

late season is a tough time to be in the woods without a dog. leave no bush unkicked, hunt the food sources, and hunt slowly. stop and listen often.

Life's too short to hunt with an ugly dog.

Re: Help!

go watch for tracks especially a few days after the snow... rabbits will be active a day or so after snow..look for tracks and pellets

Grouse are a little more involved but you may find track around a high stem density food source or a spring seep or pine grove.

Pheasant will leave a slightly bigger track than grouse.

watch for a warm sunny day and squirrels might give you some shooting too!

Good luck and have fun!

Re: Help!

I went back to squirrel hunting after 5 or so years of exclusively hunting big game. I was tired of spending days in the field with minimal deer or bear sightings. I worked very hard to put myself in a good position to shoot a deer with archery equipment, only to see nothing for days in a row.

I have had less time to spend hunting this year because of work, yet I have had a very successful and exciting year without firing a single shot at a deer. I enjoy hunting small game, and I am much more successful at it than I have been with Big Game Archery hunting. Try squirrel hunting Pine Covered Creek Bottoms, you can usually hear the red squirrels chattering. I have harvested more Gray Squirrels with a Remington 870 than any other firearm I have owned. I am still on the hunt for a Fox Squirrel this year. Good luck and have fun!

Re: Help!

Also hunt thermal cover. Pines, hemlocks, etc. Cold, windy weather also has them seeking warmth.
