Pheasant program waist of time?

Seems to me the PGC spends a lot of funds to bring back a substainable population. Seems to me they've been trying since I was a young hunter 35 years ago. It doesn't seem like its ever going to work. I'm all for it if it works and I would like to see it work, but right now it just seems like a waste of funds. Enlighten me!

Are you talking about the stocking program they have been doing for years from their game farms around the state? If so, they are not trying to re-establish a population of pheasants from that program, strictly put and take. Kinda like the trout stocking program. Box birds and bucket fish.

Seems to me you should do some research on what you are ranting about.

My 13 year old son does'nt think it's a waste of time. He bagged his limit of Pheasants on the first Sat. of the youth hunt. Had a GREAT time as did I. First game he has ever taken. Now he is hooked! I think we have a new hunter! Far from a waste of time.

the ideas great, sure. but the pgc is still stocking hens in areas that aren't open to harvesting hens! how is that anything but a complete and utter waste of money? if you're just trying to teach them to identify their target, I think a simple photograph would be infinitely cheaper and just as effective without the risk of tricking some kid into shooting it and being chastised.

Not true. I was just talking to the Land and Cover manager for SGL 145 the other day. He told me this spring they had a couple broods of Pheasant poults running around. And that is only because they stock hens as well.

Re: Pheasant program waist of time?

as a general rule, the state stocking program is not producing breeding populations. certainly, years of 200,000 bird releases and now 100,000 bird releases would have produced something meaningful by now. its just not happening and is definitely not a justification for using funds to stock hens when you could be stocking legal birds for people to shoot.
