Re: Squirrel hunting with 22 video

It wasn't a bad video but I would not have called myself squirrel sniper having missed the 1st shot. However it does show what squirrels will do at times. Sometimes they go running, other times they just move a little and stare like the time I shot the red squirrel with my 4" Taurus 94, missed on the 1st try a few seconds later I blew it out of the tree. I love that Taurus, well OK all 6 of them.

All the other shots were good and the last one almost straight up is a very hard shot, I know I have been in that situation and I try to avoid it. Thanks for posting.

Re: Squirrel hunting with 22 video

Not sure the elevation on the hanging grey squirrel. If the shot is low enough to sent the bullet down through the woods at a dangerous level one must wait until the tree provides a back stop on the shot.

It is a tough call since we were watching an edited video. I think it comes down to ethics, seeing your target and what is behind it. Given my history I would take the straight on shot before the angled.

The last year I hunted I was squirrel hunting in an area I had grown fairly familiar with. About 100-150 yards North of me I kept seeing something that just didn't look right. I didn't have binocs with me so I turned the scope on my Marlin 22mag up to 9x, unchambered the round, removed the bolt and turned the rifle 90º to avoid touching the trigger. That is when I saw him. A VERY VERY well camo'd guy up in his very well camo'd stand. He must have saw me through his binocs because he started to frantically wave.

I felt sick at the thought of what could have happened and how he thought I was aiming towards him. I left immediately.

Before anyone tells me I shouldn't do that with a rifle, I know that but I am glad that I did before I popped a squirrel in that direction. It was early in the season and there was still a fair amount of coverage. I am glad I "felt" something was right in that direction.

Archers, maybe think about this when squirrel season opens, PLEASE mark your tree with an orange band while you are in it.
