Woodcock

Am I the only one having trouble finding woodcock this fall? Hate to think a bird with an upside down brain the size of a pea is out smarting me. , Have found a few in southern Clearfield County last week.

The essence of the shot is how you shoot the bird, not how many. George Bird Evans

Had some luck in early October with resident birds, but haven't seen any in November. Can't believe I totally missed the migrating birds.

I've had no problems finding them in good numbers starting in August up thru last Wednesday; couldn't get my dogs to leave them alone and get their minds on grouse. I don't waste time looking for flight birds when there are grouse to kill.

Plenty of scouting and good habitat makes for a great hunt.

I've flushed a couple while rabbit hunting in Erie County.

It's been a weird year so far for me and the dogs and the woodcock numbers have probably been the most disappointing. We just haven't found many. We haven't specifically targeted them on certain days as much as I have in previous years but still we just haven't put many up. Of course some of my best spots are under 1-2ft of water and have been since the season started.

I have never hunted them, but was going to give it a try this weekend. Is it too late in the season? I am in the Harrisburg area.

Glad I'm not the only one having trouble finding the little russeted gypsies.
