Finally got the grandson out
Been waiting for some decent Saturday weather, and while this morning wasn't ideal, it was acceptable for my son and I to take the grandson along for a squirrel hunt. We got up and I made breakfast and headed out. After turning around and returning home to get an extra seat, we finally got to the woods just at daylight. Despite a light rain and some light wind, we made our way along the edge of a field and cut back into the woods to a spot that has traditionally held a decent amount of squirrels. Got set up on a tree and settled in.
The grandson did much better at keeping his voice down that last year, although sitting still was still a major challenge. We sat and talked quietly while we looked around. We had more hot chocolate, snack cakes, and his favorite; slim jims. In spite of the movement and quiet discussion, we still managed to see three deer, and one single squirrel, (which Pappy missed an easy 25yd shot with the .22). He lasted for about 90 minutes, which was better than last season, and then we headed back to the car. We took a short detour to a local state park, where we saw some ducks, three pheasants, and a great blue heron fishing from a dock, and answered a ton of questions about all of them. All in all a absolutely great day with the three of us together. Here's a pic of the two of them.
If you're having trouble hunting for deer,
don't wish things were easier;
wish you were smarter.
