Northeast PA Grouse Help

Hello all. New to the forum. Just bought a place up by Lake Wallenpaupack and would like to try grouse hunting. I know that grouse has been on the decline for the last few years but I’d like to give it a go anyway. I’m not asking for anyone to give up their secret spots but just wanted to see if anyone could provide some guidance. I was looking to try SGL 159 in Wayne county. Is it with it? If so, any particular parking area? Thanks again!

Scout, look for aspen, wild grape etc, find the food and cover find the grouse.

When you are up to your butt in alligators, it is hard to remember your intent was to drain the swamp. Stay focused!

I've hunted 159 before and put up quite a few grouse. I hunt with a few friends that have a cabin in the area... You shouldn't have a problem putting up grouse in that SGL. Good luck! Even if you put them up they are very hard to hit!

I have hunted some of the SGL’s south of Lake Wallenpaupack (127, 135) and have found a few birds, but not many. My grandfather tells stories of how good the grouse hunting used to be right along the lake.

.

Not asking for you to give up your secret spot but could you direct me to a good access point where I may find a few?

Grouse are found with boot leather, not the internet, Why would you think people who have scouted and sweated finding grouse coverts would give them away to someone who scouts with the internet. Now being new you probably don't know but grouse coverts are not given away readily especially to strangers because they can be shot out easily. You have been given areas to look at, the rest is up to you.

Woods walker. Whether a RGS meeting, magazine or the internet, information is information. Isn’t this what the site is for? Hunters helping other hunters? I’m not asking for GPS coordinates. I have no problem putting in the legwork. I’m more looking for help with finding access points and footpaths to follow as I am not familiar with my local SGLs and DCNR properties.

Make Google Earth your friend as well as the various PGC/DCNR sites. Look for logging activity that is around a decade old. When using mapping sites look for breaks in forest as well as what Woods Walker describes for habitat.

Good luck and enjoy the pursuit!!
