Why is the PA squirrel opener so late?

NY, MD, and OH opener is Sept. 1st. NJ is Sept. 25. Why is our opener so late for squirrel?

One could assume it has a lot to do with some of the same type of biologists that help us to decide how big of a rack is legal to take and in which WMU. It would be nice to have an earlier season. It may also be because archery opens as early as mid September and they want to keep guns out of the woods. After all if you hear a gun going off in the woods in September it will raise some alarm.

As he hung up his fishing rod he said, "why cast when you can blast".

I like the start date because I can hunt archery for 2 weeks
and because the trees still have alot of leafs on them until
mid october. Archery gives me a chance to scout squirrels
too

I'd rather be fishing or hunting!

eh, there might be more but I think both populations are so large its pretty negligble. could be because of archery, although I'd love to see the season go from about oct.1 to april 1.

Life's too short to hunt with an ugly dog.

I think they could run a long squirrel only season because I don't think there are as many who hunt squirrels. I know many times I would have enjoyed during a late Winter or early Spring thaw to be able to hunt bushy tails. I would see 20 on the way to work and some on road tests.
