pleasant surpirse

Flushed three grouse broods on a hike today on sgl within a 1/2 mile of one another
First had 4 chicks, second had 7, and third had 3... best I could count. First and third broods were weak flying, very small..second brood seemed stronger. Surprisingly all mamas had broken wings... go figure.

The laurel is getting pretty too!!!

Good deal!

When you are up to your butt in alligators, it is hard to remember your intent was to drain the swamp. Stay focused!

Broken wings? Perhaps just feigning injury to draw attention away from the chicks?

We're talking about a bird with a brain the size of a pea..All three coming up with the same ruse????? What are the chances of that?

Would love to see A grouse comeback, I loved hunting for them as a kid but have not hunted them at all for at least 10 years. I saw one on game lands near my house the end of April while out trout fishing and that is the first one I have seen in 5 years. I was more excited to see the grouse than the I was with the 5 trout I caught that day.

I thought the timberdoodle (no not you) was the only bird to employ the broken wing tactic ?

Anybody have a "Pheasant Surprise" ?

Nope, Killdeer do it as well.

I had a mallard hen do the broken wing act when I was fishing one morning. She had 14 ducklings.
