Blank Pistol.

Is it legal or ethical to carry a blank pistol while hunting with shotgun for small game, for dog training purposes?

If you enjoy hunting please find a way to give back to the sport. Our children will thank you.

Re: Blank Pistol.

I am grouse hunting alone with my pup. Can't get a shot off on the bird because of flushing the bird or dense cover. Can I fire a blank from a pistol to at least assist with teh training of the pup?

Re: Blank Pistol.

Why not just fire the shotgun in the air? Most realistic sound you can get plus you are not carrying two guns.

Traditions only last if you pass them down to your kids!

I was under the impression that discharging a hunting firearm during season was illegal. If I am wrong, then that is what I will do.

Re: Blank Pistol.

I would hold off with the shooting a shotgun until the pup is well aquainted with gun fire. In addition if you are working a pointing breed you may want to avoid shooting until the dog is holding point and you are doing the flushing. I wouldn't want to be shooting for busted birds or wild flushes....

If you are working a flushing breed the dog still has to locate and flush the bird before you shoot...

Re: Blank Pistol.

I carry a blank gun a lot while hunting, I will use it in certain woodcock coverts when I don't want to kill the woodcock (I found it harder and harder to shoot one of those awesome birds) but want to enjoy the dog work. I never considered the legality of it but if that's illegal I don't mind breaking a law like that.

Re: Blank Pistol.

If your grouse hunting and waiting for the perfect shot you will never kill a grouse. You will have to shoot through some brush.

Also if your grouse hunting and trying to go between a blank pistol and your shotgun, you won't get a shot off until the bird has already landed 100 yards away.

Keep it simple.

The deer didn't disappear.... the 250,000 guys who used to walk around and make the deer move did.

Re: Blank Pistol.

I understand what you are saying. Even so, I have my reasons as part of my training program for my pup.

All I am asking, is it legal to carry a blank pistol and discharge it while working wild birds during hunting season?
