multiple johnny houses

Has anybody used multiple johnny houses for quail? I have one johnny house set up and I was wondering if I set up another one a 1/4 mile away would the birds go back and forth to each house? There would be enough cover between the houses to offer the birds protection.

Re: multiple johnny houses

You would be better off having a covey in each house.

Re: multiple johnny houses

I was thinking of putting more birds in the 2nd jh but I was wondering if the birds would go from one house to the other. I wasn't sure how far the birds would travel.

Re: multiple johnny houses

I am no quail expert but I doubt they would move a quarter mile if they have food and cover and shelter where they are. In areas with quail there are usually several coveys who kind of stake out their own territory.

I think I'll try to put up the 2nd jh and see how things go.

Re: multiple johnny houses

I echo John's quail expertise. I've heard somewhere that once coveys are established, they don't take too kindly to strangers, as in newbies will get the crap pecked out of them.

I'd be curious to hear if any moved back and forth. I suppose it would depend on how far they flush and if they can hear any calling from the other pen. I noticed the quail I have fly to the closest heavy cover after flushing, and if flushed in heavy cover fly 50-75 yards before landing.

If guns cause crime, mine must be broken.

Re: multiple johnny houses

The grounds I train on we have 5 pens currently. While they are not all always filled we consistenlty have at least 3 filled most of the year. The closest any house is to another is around 400yards (estimatation). The Problems occur when birds are taken too far away from one johnny house and used or flies close to another. One bird from a different house entering an established Johnny house is often killed.

Multiple houses is the way to go, you can have young birds in one pen getting established while still being able to train with birds out of different pen. It offers protection in case a predator or disease kills off all birds in one pen. Plus it keeps the dog from only hunting in one area.

Re: multiple johnny houses

Thanks for the information. I'll have to get another pen built and everything set up before I can try it out.

Re: multiple johnny houses

I built an extension on mine... the base is 4' x 8' complete with a no-mess gravity feeder and watering system I built. I'll post pictures later on this evening if I can make it up the hill in this heat.
